What We Do / River Trips
The Tuckahoe River is truly a gem. We meet at 247 Marshallville Rd, in Tuckahoe and take a 5 minute ride up Route 49 to our put out spot at Head of River. Here, the Tarkiln Creek flows out of an old cranberry bog and under the road to a sandy area. The natural grotto makes for an easy launch. This upper run is narrow, canopied with trees above and dark clear water below. Warblers are nesting residents of this upper stretch. Emerging from the trees, McNeals Branch joins from the left to form the river proper. Quiet smooth gliding sets the pace as the river meanders through pickerel weed and wild flowers. Paddling and taking it all in, you realize this water has been here a long time. A hundred years ago Warners Mill Stream, now called Lords Lane was used to build schooners. The names, the people, the bog iron furnaces, and now the eagles. Our majestic pair has claimed the river as their own, they rule the upper river, patrolling their nesting territory daily. Pristine slowly gives way to a few houses as we paddle past Charlie’s Creek and Mill Creek. But the river sets the pace. Two knots is the maximum current, and we always time it for a downhill run. Every day on the river is a very special, unique experience. We end where we began, at the dock on Marshallville Rd. Smiling and drinking water, stretching. Happy to be alive in this wonderful place.
